SPM Result Letdown

How could SPM results be leaked to the public one week before official results are announced? That was the question in my mind when I read about the girl who purportedly scored 19 1As in the exams.

In the newspapers yesterday, we all found out that she didn't quit make it. She scored a measly 18As – only 14 1As, four 2As and one 3B. All the hype, all the fuss, not to mention all the built-up excitement this girl had gone through since the news leaked last week, and all for what? Read the story here.

I can only imagine the devastation on her part when the official results are finally announced. Sure, she said she's bersyukur anyway. Of course, but who knows what is going on in her mind. And to think that her hometown was already celebrating her 'success' by putting up banners and buntings all over the place.

I remember when I read the news about it last week, I thought to myself that this girl has got it all wrong. She wanted so much to beat Amalina's record that she left the boarding school that didn't allow her to take up extra subjects. Her objective was solely to beat that 17 1As record set a few years back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the focus should be on doing well on the core subjects, particularly ones that can guarantee admission for a good tertiary education, and not merely breaking records. After all, if you wanna break records, you can just walk backwards and barefoot all the way from KL to Perlis and your name will be in the Malaysia Book Of Records (not to mention, a Datukship on the way!).

Kids these days, getting all A1s, from as low as 11 As to the current record 17, I am truly amazed by it all. Particularly so when looking at my own SPM result; what they got in 1As, that's what a lot of us got in aggregate back then when getting aggregate below 15 was such a big deal!!

Sue, you're wrong, girl. The focus should be on achieving an overall success, be an all-rounder while you can. Study hard, join all the Persatuans, play some sports, be a librarian, party and organise some projects at school! Don't just go to class, and attend tuition afterwards!

well, I'm not talking about the overall aspect of schooling. All the extra-curricullar activities aside, the academic focus should be on doing well on the subjects at hand, that's what i meant.

No, U shut up, dumbass!

It's a proven fact that so many straight As student have problems when they get to varsity. And so many intellectual and brainiacs in the world didn't even get good grades in school (eg: Einstein). So, you see, straight As in SPM mean nothing when you come out to the real world - the world that matters!

And the fact that your 'by the book' brain can't think beyond those As is a proven testimony to that.

rumour aje la... anyway, she denied the rumour, saying she didn't fail her exams and drop out of the ladies college she's in now. But that's not what the rumour said... rumours said she failed the Cambridge U entrance test.

I don't dispute that she's smart, after all, she did get 17 A1s -- that is no mean feat-- but she's just not cambridge material.
